The Science of
Virginia Clay
Richmond's Piedmont clay is notoriously unstable. We don't just "lay pavers"—we engineer structural foundations that defy soil movement.
Your Vision,
Our Craftsmanship
We turn outdoor living dreams into spaces you actually want to spend time in — designed around how you live, built with the care your home deserves.
SINCE 2012
Design First
Every project starts with understanding how you want the space to feel — then we design around that vision with 3D renderings and material selections.
Built To Last
Our builds go deeper than what you see on the surface. Proper base prep, drainage, and materials mean your outdoor space stays beautiful for decades.
Certified Crew
ICPI and NCMA certified installers. We hold national certifications so you don't have to worry about whether the work was done right.
Full Service
From the first phone call to the final walkthrough — design, materials, permitting, installation, and warranty. One team, one process, one point of contact.
"Most hardscape failures in Central Virginia aren't caused by the pavers—they're caused by the reactive subgrade. Standard 4-inch bases are essentially floating on a slow-motion liquid. We dig deeper to find stability."
Why Richmond Clay Is So Hard On Patios
The Greater Richmond area sits on Ultisols, ancient Piedmont clays that act more like a hydraulic fluid than solid ground. Under a microscope, clay particles are flat plates. When water enters, these plates slide and expand, increasing volume by up to 15%.
The Shrink-Swell Cycle
Wet winters cause the soil to "heave" upward. Dry Virginia summers cause it to shrink and crack. This cycle snaps concrete and shifts pavers that haven't been properly stabilized.
Subgrade Pumping
Without a separation layer, traffic over the pavers forces wet clay up into the gravel base. This "pumping" destroys the base's load-bearing capacity and drainage.
The Evergreen Stabilization Method
We utilize a "Floating Slab" methodology inspired by heavy civil engineering. Our installations don't fight the clay; they bridge it.
1. Multi-Dimensional Excavation
We excavate 10-14 inches deep. This removes the "O-Horizon" (organic layer) and the most reactive upper clay layers. We create a smooth, pitched subgrade that allows water to move to a designated discharge point rather than pooling under your stone.
2. Non-Woven Geotextile Armor
We line the entire excavation with 6oz non-woven geotextile fabric. This is your insurance policy. It prevents the subgrade from ever contaminating your aggregate base, ensuring the drainage remains clear for decades.
Aperture Confinement & Geogrids
For driveways and large patios, we integrate Biaxial Geogrids. This high-tensile mesh locks the aggregate in place. Instead of stones shifting individually, they lock into the grid's "apertures," creating a rigid, reinforced platform that distributes point loads across thousands of square inches.

3. Aggregate Interlock
We don't use "crusher run." We use clean, angular #57 and #8 stone in managed lifts. The angular edges of the stone provide mechanical interlock—the stones literally bite into each other. When compacted, this creates a stable matrix that allows water to flow through while resisting any lateral movement.

Protect Your Investment
Hardscaping is a major investment in your home's equity. In Richmond, Virginia, you cannot afford to ignore the soil. A beautiful patio built on a weak base is just a pile of expensive trash waiting for the next rainy season.
Proven
In Situ
“From the first phone call, they made us feel like our project actually mattered. The 3D design blew us away — we could see exactly what our backyard would look like before they broke ground. The finished patio is even more beautiful than the rendering.”
Sarah J.
Short Pump
“Regan walked us through every detail and kept us updated the entire build. No surprises, no stress. Our neighbors can't stop complimenting the new patio and walkway — it completely transformed our outdoor space.”
Robert L.
The Fan District
“We interviewed three companies and Evergreen was the only one who actually listened to what we wanted. The design process was collaborative, the crew was professional, and they finished on schedule. Our pool deck looks like a resort.”
Michael P.
Midlothian (Hallsley)
“The attention to detail is what sets them apart. Everything from the color selection to the lighting design was thoughtful. Our outdoor kitchen has become the center of every family gathering. Best investment we've made in our home.”
